When Should I Hire a Plumber to Install a Sump Pump?

If you have a basement, you probably already have a sump pump. If you have a basement and DON’T have a sump pump, this is where things can get complicated. Any water that gets into your basement can damage your walls and foundation, cause mildew, and can lead to dangerous mold growth that can put your family’s lives in danger.

If You Need to Replace an Existing Sump Pump

If you are particularly handy, you may be able to replace your existing sump pump with a trip to Home Depot and several YouTube videos. But do you really want to take the chance if something goes wrong? While it may cost a bit more upfront, hiring a professional to do the job usually ends up costing less over time.

If You Need to Install a New Sump Pump System

This is NOT something you want to try and do yourself unless you have both construction and plumbing experience. To install a new sump pump system, you need to:

  • Choose a location for the sump pump. It should be near an electrical outlet and near the area where water collects, such as a basement corner or crawl space.
  • Break through you basement floor and dig a pit for the sump pump. The pit should be deep enough to allow the pump to be fully submerged in water.
  • Assemble the sump pump according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This typically involves attaching the pump to the motor, connecting the float switch, and attaching any additional components such as check valves.
  • Place the sump pump in the pit and connect the discharge pipe. The discharge pipe should be long enough to reach the desired location for the water to be discharged, such as a nearby storm drain or dry well.
  • Test the sump pump to make sure it’s working properly. Fill the pit with water and ensure that the pump turns on and pumps the water out of the pit.

Again, there are too many things that can go wrong. Unless you are professionally trained, installing a new sump pump system should be done by professionals

In Conclusion

It is a good idea to hire a plumber to install a sump pump if you have a basement or crawl space that is prone to flooding, or if you live in an area with a high water table. A sump pump is designed to remove excess water from these areas, which can help prevent costly water damage to your home. If you are experiencing water in your basement or crawl space, or if you are concerned about the potential for flooding, it is a good idea to have a sump pump installed by a professional plumber. They will be able to assess your specific needs and recommend the best type of sump pump for your home.
